Fibrocystic breast disease
It is a benign breast disease.
It is also called fibrocystic disease of the breast. It is the most common benign disease in women. It occurs at any age.It is the combination of different types of lesions, non inflammatory, non-neoplastic sclerosis, cysts, adenosis (an increase in the size of glandular lobules). The existence of fibrocystic disease slightly increases the risk of breast cancer: women affected are well controlled.Fibrocystic disease This is due to hormonal imbalance in estrogen-progestin milk ducts: there is not enough progesterone relative to estrogen. This leads to a proliferation of a breast duct with dilatation of these channels and hypersecretion forming cysts. It is typically a 35 year old woman with chronic breast pain, heightened during the premenstrual period (ie the maximum pain is just before menstruation). The examination finds one or more lumps or even a closet, sometimes with a nipple discharge. The size of cysts and nodules is variable depending on the time of the cycle. There may be ipsilateral axillary lymph nodes but not suspicious.Treatment is medical, involving progestins. If a suspicious area is identified, it can be biopsied and it is sometimes removed surgically.
