My periods have become irregular and painful. Why is this happening and what should I do do?
Outside of periods during puberty, pre-menopause and oral contraceptives, this problem is very common and often harmless. A consultation will look for the cause and begin treatment.Causes of painful periods:-Pelvic endometriosis-functional ovarian cysts-adenomyosis, uterine fibroids-cervical stenosis, or narrowing of the cervical neck-functional dysmenorrhea (without cause found)Treatment involves analgesics (paracetamol), antispasmodics (Spasfon) and antiprostaglandines (example: Ponstyl). The combined oral and progestin can also releive , whether taken in mid-cycle,for contraceptive purposes, or continuously (by limiting menstruation to a few episodes per year).Causes of irregular periods:-polycystic ovary syndrome-endocrine disease such as thyroid impairment, or pituitary Cushing's syndrome-certain medications such as steroids- high performance sportDepending on the cause, you can go without treatment if discomfort is minimal. Otherwise, replacement therapy is possible, either by Duphaston alone ,or by Duphaston followed by either a relay by an Estrogen pill.
