I would like an IUD. What is special about this form of contraception?
The intrauterine device or IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a good method of contraception, although slightly less effective than the pill. The duration of action of IUDs is limited, from 3 to 5 years. It is best used for women who have had at least one child. There are two types of IUDs, copper IUDs (eg Sertalia) and progesterone IUD (eg Mirena). There are contraindications common to both types, preventing an IUD if:-current pregnancy-childbirth dating from less than three months-history of ectopic pregnancy-important uterine malformation -genital infection-uterine cancer-blood clotting disorders or concurrent anticoagulant therapy-cardiac valve diseaseThe additional contraindications to copper IUDs are an allergy to copper and Wilson's disease. An IUD is inserted during a consultation at the end of menstruation, and requires a check-up following periods to verify the correct implementation. Subsequently, it is imperative to see a doctor in case of fever or bleeding genitalia to eliminate possible side effects such as endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy.
